According to the most recent statistics, Muslims make up 5.6 percent of the Philippine population. Despite being a minority in terms of population, their traditions and culture are so rich that they deserve to be explored. Not to mention the delicious food you must try.
Here are the top five delicacies from Muslim brothers and sisters in countries you should try the next time you visit.

1. The Tiyula Itum

“Tiyula’ itum” is the best Tausug appetizer and a popular Muslim dish. Even among the Tausug, no one knows how this food originated, but because of the inclusion of burned coconut, people assumed it was a Tausug dish.

2. Nasi Lemak Rice

Nasi Lemak is a fragrant rice dish made with coconut milk and “pandan” leaf. It is well-known in the Philippines as one of the most popular dishes served during the Muslim holiday of Hari Raya.

3. Lokot-lokot

Lokot-lokot is also known as Zambo Rolls. It is a traditional delicacy in Zamboanga and its surrounding cities. Depending on where you find it, it is also known as “ja,” “tagaktak,” or “lokot-lokot.”

4. Baulo

Bauro is grilled rice served during festival seasons such as Hari Raya. This delicacy is very similar to the classic French Madeleine, but with a unique twist. Some people make a lot with Royal Aranciata drinks and flavored fruit juices. The traditional way to prepare this treat is to bake them in a “pugon” using improvised forms.

5. Beef Kulma

Kulma are one of the Filipino dishes that many people are unfamiliar with. It started on Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines. There, a minority of Maranao, Kettle, Tausg, and Maguindanao categorically opposed the colonization of Europe and North America, preserving their lifestyles, Islamic beliefs, and culture. The car can be considered a dish that spans all cultures of the Philippines and is enjoyed by both Muslims and Christians in Mindanao.

1. Salipawpaw

2. Sambat

3. Salumpuwit

English translation: chair
